The Myth of the Difficult Orchid

Phalaenopsis are some of the most misunderstood plants in cultivation. Once you understand where they actually come from, everything changes.

I have a long history with Phalaenopsis. Long before this studio existed — before the weddings and the editorial work and the decade-plus of making flowers professionally — I was in college writing a research project about them. Something about these plants pulled at me in a way I couldn't fully explain at the time. I understand it better now. They operate on their own terms, in their own time, on conditions you have to meet rather than force. That, as it turns out, is a pretty good metaphor for most things worth caring about.

They're also wildly, persistently misunderstood — and that misunderstanding is responsible for millions of needlessly dead orchids every year. Let's correct the record.

First: What Is an Epiphyte?

Phalaenopsis are epiphytes — plants that grow on other plants rather than in soil. In their native habitat across Southeast Asia, the Philippines, and northern Australia, they anchor their roots to the bark of trees in humid, dappled forest canopies. They are not parasites; they draw no nutrients from their host. They simply use the tree as a structure, catching rainfall, decomposing organic matter, and dappled light as it filters through the canopy above.

This one fact — that they are epiphytes — explains almost everything about how to care for them properly. Their roots need to breathe. They are accustomed to wet-dry cycles, not constant moisture. They have never, not once in their evolutionary history, encountered potting soil, a windowsill draft, or a well-meaning ice cube.

The ice watering myth — spread widely by big-box retailers as a kind of foolproof "no mess" solution — is genuinely baffling when you hold it against what these plants actually are. Cold water applied directly to tropical roots causes damage at the cellular level. It's the botanical equivalent of recommending someone eat frozen food straight from the freezer without thawing it first, because then you can't overfeed them. Just water them properly. A thorough drench, allowed to drain completely, every seven to ten days depending on your environment. That's it.

Understanding the Light Cycle

Phalaenopsis are photoperiodic — meaning they respond to changes in day length and light intensity as seasonal cues. This is the mechanism behind reblooming, and understanding it transforms the plant from mysterious to entirely predictable.

In their natural habitat, the transition from wet season to dry season (and longer nights of a tropical "winter") triggers flowering. In cultivation, we can mimic this. After a plant finishes blooming and the spike begins to look spent, most people immediately cut it back and return the plant to the same bright windowsill where it lived before. This is a mistake — or rather, it's a missed opportunity.

Moving the plant to a slightly lower-light position for six to eight weeks — still bright, but not the brightest spot in your home — combined with slightly cooler nights (a range of roughly 55–65°F at night works well), signals the plant that conditions are shifting. This is the environmental nudge it needs to initiate a new flower spike. Once you see the spike emerging, return it to your brightest indirect light and resume normal care.

The Stem Question Do not cut a green flower spike immediately after blooming ends. A green spike may rebloom from a node along its length — watch for small triangle-shaped buds forming. Only cut once the stem has fully turned brown and papery. At that point, cut cleanly at the base and compost the spike. Patience is always the right answer with orchids.

Fertilizing Without Overthinking It

Orchids are light feeders. In nature, they subsist on whatever organic matter washes over their roots in rainfall — not a particularly concentrated meal. In cultivation, the rule I always come back to is "weakly, weekly": a balanced fertilizer (20-20-20 or an orchid-specific formula) diluted to roughly a quarter of the recommended strength, applied with every other watering during the growing season. In fall and winter, drop back to once a month. That's all.

More fertilizer does not mean more flowers. It means salt buildup in the substrate, burned root tips, and a stressed plant. Less is genuinely more here.

The Substrate Question

Standard potting mix is wrong for Phalaenopsis. It holds too much moisture, stays too dense, and smothers roots that need air circulation to function. The substrate should mimic what roots experience in nature: chunky, open, fast-draining, with good moisture retention between waterings but no waterlogging.

The mix I use and recommend:

  • Coir (coconut fibre)Moisture retention without compacting
  • Horticultural charcoalKeeps mix sweet, prevents bacterial buildup
  • Sphagnum mossHumidity buffering around roots
  • LECA (expanded clay aggregate)Drainage channels and aeration

The proportions don't need to be exact — roughly equal parts of each works well. The goal is a mix that holds some moisture but drains quickly and never compacts into a soggy mass. Repot every one to two years in spring, going up only one pot size at a time. Phalaenopsis actually prefer to be slightly snug — a pot that's too large holds excess moisture the roots can't process.

Wipe Your Leaves

This one gets overlooked almost universally, and I think it's because it sounds fussy or optional. It isn't. Orchid leaves photosynthesise through their surface, and their stomata — the microscopic pores through which they exchange gases and transpire moisture — are right there on the leaf face. Dust, hard water mineral deposits, and indoor grime accumulate over time and literally block these pores.

A gentle wipe with a soft, damp cloth every few weeks keeps leaves functioning as they're meant to. It also gives you a chance to check for early signs of pest activity — spider mites, scale, and mealybug all like to set up shop on the undersides of leaves. Catching them early makes all the difference.

Aerial RootsThose silvery-green roots growing out over the edge of the pot and into the air are not a sign of distress or a reason to repot. They are the plant doing exactly what it evolved to do — reaching out to catch ambient moisture and anchor to its environment. Leave them. Never try to push them back into the substrate; they will rot. If they concern you aesthetically, a larger pot won't help. Just admire them for what they are.

The Payoff

A Phalaenopsis that understands its environment — that gets appropriate light, a genuine wet-dry cycle, something resembling its natural substrate, and the occasional light feed — is not a difficult plant. It is a deeply rewarding one. A well-grown specimen can carry a single spike for three to four months. A mature plant with multiple spikes in full bloom is genuinely one of the more extraordinary things a houseplant can do.

They were the first plants that made me feel like I was learning a language rather than following instructions. That feeling has never quite left. I hope, if you have one sitting on a windowsill somewhere waiting to be understood, this helps.
